This week, we had finals. There were two essays. One, was a business letter and the other one was a writing prompt essay. I did my writing prompt essay on dialect and hoe dialect helps literature. Personally, I love seeing dialect in literature because it gives it personality. Plus, it engages the reader, as well. I gave six examples from three different books, Out of My Mind, Bridge to Terabithia, and The Pearl. Each one of those books has many examples of dialect throughout it. Characters are explained from what they say and that is dialect, that is the whole meaning of dialect. For the business letter, I wrote three paragraphs (one for each trimester) and then I explained why I learned and what happened in my life during that trimester. I received my business letter back yesterday and I discovered that I got a 100% on it! I was very pleased. I read through it again and I saw that Mrs. Todesco corrected something. I looked closer and it was that I put “thins” instead go “things”. I was laughing pretty hard, but I was just happy that I didn’t get points off for the typo that I accidentally wrote. I was stressed out for both essays because we had two hours to do both of them, one hour for each. The last time I had to write an essay in class, it took me more than an hour which frightened me because I thought the same would happen here. Thankfully, I finished both in time I and think that I did great on my writing prompt essay. Here is a hyperlink to a video about essays vvvvv

This week in English class, we read an article on chicken nuggets and how they are made. To be honest, what I learned from this article is disgusting. The article is called “Chicken Nuggets, Anyone?” and was written by Jennifer Jones. It is only a five paragraph informative article, but it holds a lot of information on chicken nuggets, such as the steps on how they are made. Places like McDonalds have raw and frozen chicken nuggets shipped to them and then they deep fry those nuggets. Hopefully, just hopefully you don't mistakenly get served a raw nugget. Other places also have chicken nuggets that are shipped from places that make the chicken nuggets. Here are the steps that it takes to make these chicken nuggets. These steps, are from a writing comprehension worksheet I did. “Chicken’s are raised for eating at certain farms. Then, the bones are skin are removed. The breast meat is cut up into big pieces and gets prepared for grinding. Seasoning is added when the meat is being ground. Then, they add the skin to help connect the meat. After, they’re placed in a machine, the nuggets are formed into four shapes; a bell, a ball, a bowtie, and a boat. A small amount of batter is put into the meat, then a thick lay (tempura). Next, the nuggets are shipped and kept frozen. Once, they reach the restaurant, they're still raw. Lastly, once the nuggets are deep fried, they are ready to be served.” Below, is a hyperlink to a video about how gross chicken nuggets are vvvvv

Smiley face tricks are tricks and technique’s used in writing. This year was the first year that we learned smiley face tricks which included eight tricks, that can make our writing stronger. there are hyphenated modifiers, descriptive words, full-circle ending, magic three, figurative language, and repetition for effect are just a few. I have started to use these effects in my writing. The smiley face tricks aren't the easiest to add into your writing, but they will sure make it better. Anyway, here is an example; “Darren stared at Terry with the I-told-you-once look and Terry stopped moving right away. I couldn't help but blurt out, “Terry can’t ever stop moving, he’s like the waves in the ocean!” “Oh, there you go again with the ocean talk! Hahahaha!” laughed Terry. Darren handed Terry his portrait and lo and behold, it was blurry. “I warned you!” Darren yelled as we were walking away and this time he looked as if he we're ready to punch someone. I didn’t stop thinking about the offer Terry made. It was like a hive of bees swarming around my head looking for honey. I asked Mrs. Whitfield and she actually thought that it was a good idea. She did confess that she would miss me, though. I walked up to Terry and whispered in his small ear, “I’m ready to go.” I knew then, that it was the beginning of the end.” (my historical narrative) In this example there are many smiley face tricks. There are hyphenated modifiers, description, and figurative language in my historical narrative. Here is a hyperlink to a video about smiley face tricks vvvvvvvvv
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agpyeKsjjq8 This week, We are turning in our composition books and I am happy because I finally get to write again. I just got my cast off today because I fractured my elbow around three weeks ago. I can’t wait to actually write things for all of my classes. My composition book is due tomorrow, Friday 5/13/16 and I really been trying to make this the best composition book I have ever made. I really love color coding all of my notes and writing down all of my thoughts and reflections on multiple things. Surprisingly, my composition book makes me happy and less stressed. I love to write down my feelings and stories that pile up in my head. Stories. Stories let me express my true self through fictional characters. Best of all, I love to create mysterious endings or endings where everything was actually a “dream”. Anyway, stories for many authors and illustrators are their “escape portals” to their own life. Some authors write about their experiences in life, some sad and some happy. In the ned stories are based off of at least one time inn a person’s life or in this case an author’s life. I extremely love to write and I can totally understand why authors love to write as well. I hope that stories continue to come out on paper because almost everything is going online. I absolutely love the smell of a new book that you buy from a book store. I love writing and reading and I hope you do, too! Here is a hyperlink to a video about author's lives
http://www.scottishbooktrust.com/podcasts/video/authors-live-david-walliams This week, we are finishing our film for our mini Film Festival at school on Friday. So far, it’s been going very well. We have been getting along and we have been deciding on everything and our video is now done. We certainly did disagree on some things, but the majority rules … so. It was a long road to hoe. It was a great experience and I loved doing it, but we have had one huge disagreement between two of our group members. It was resolved. Now, we are EAGERLY waiting to be able to go to the film Festival at Grill Hall. We really hope that we are picked to go to the final Film Festival which will be held in two weeks at CSUN. The students and the teachers are going to be voting tomorrow and it is really nerve racking. I have butterflies in my stomach, right now as I am typing this. I really hope we win and think it’s totally possible. We tried very hard on this documentary and I think deserve whatever we get. I am glad that everything will be picked fair and square and not by popularity. Some people, for Student Council get voted in by popularity and this will be different. Popularity should be the least of our concerns, but sadly many things in life are’t fair. We are just thankful that this will be fair. I ca not wait till tomorrow! It will be an awesome day full of fun! The hyperlink below has tips for filming!!! vvvvvvvvvvvv
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njeCxUspmHk This week, we have been reading Bridge to Terabithia. We have gotten through chapter four and three this week. I really like the book so far because it is unique. So far Leslie and Jess have created a very strong relationship. I should say that they’ve created a strong friendship. Leslie and Jess are great friends and really nothing can come int the way of that. They went behind Leslie’s house and created a secret kingdom which Leslie names as Terabithia (hence the name of the book, Bridge to Terabithia). They went there everyday after school so that they could have “alone time”. They were unique kids and the knew it. That’s why they were perfect friends. At school, it took a while for them to start and talk to each other because people would call them “girlfriend and boyfriend”. Jess started not to care because he knew it wasn’t true at all. They loved hanging out together and they started to not care at all who knew. They would sit during Lunch and Recess and they would just talk. They would specifically make funny comments about Mrs. Myers. Leslie made Jess caught which is one of the reasons they were such good friends, they made each other happy. Jess felt weird though, at Leslie’s home, because he felt much dumber than Leslie and her parents. Jess also didn’t like to take Leslie to his home because his sisters would act weird and his mom was her usual self, who always had to be judgmental in the end. Truly, Jess and Leslie’s happy place was Terabithia. Here is a hyperlink to video about Bridge to Terabithia. vvvvvvvvv
www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi227804697 This week, we have been focusing a lot on TED Talks. This week we watched a video on Philippe Petis and his awe-inspiring adventures. Here is an awesome sneak peak to the summary I wrote on the TED Talk and really all it’s about! “In the TED Talk that we listened to today, were some very interesting and important pointers. Things like, never give up and always strive for the best. I really learned from Philippe Petit, the tight rope walker, tips in every day life. No one would think a kid who strived to become a magician would end up being a tight rope walker, right? Well, you need to put your mind into everything you do. Number one tip: YOU CAN NOT BE LAZY AND THINK YOU WILL ACHIVE ANYTHING!!! Being lazy will get you … no where! Another thing is to achieve something you have to dream and strive to do your best. You can not go into it all negative and think that will help because it won’t! Always do your best because in the long run it will get you places. Last but not least, don’t quit! Quitting is the last thing you want to do to achieve anything. Once you quit something it is a sign of weakness. Sometimes, quitting something is okay, maybe if you have to much on your plate, but if you really love something … don't quit! I loved what Philippe Petit talked about because it really made me think what is my? What am I going to do with my life? I was surely inspired today!” This is the summary I wrote on the Ted Talk. I really liked the video and it really made me start to think, about my dreams and how they don’t have to stay as dreams. I can do anything I put my mind to. I just have to sincerely believe! Here is a hyperlink to the TED Talk video that we watched⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ https://www.ted.com/talks/philippe_petit_the_journey_across_the_high_wire?language=en This week, we have been starting to read Bridge to Terabithia. This story is very well written by, the one and only Katherine Paterson. She is great author who write phenomenal young adult stories! Anyway, we just started chapter one and I already feel like I can connect to the story. So far, I know that the story is about a boy that is a very fast runner, and he is practicing so that when he goes back to school he will surely be beating everyone. He is only in fifth grade, but I can strongly relate to his competitive spirit which drives him to do better. I have been driving myself like that for a long … long time. I always want to be the best person I can be and do the best I can do. That is sort of my motto. I really like the way Katherine Paterson pulls you in to the story before you have even gotten past the first few pages. Paterson has written many great stories and I think that Bridge to Terabithia is certainly one of her best books. Bridge to Terabithia is already one of her most famous books so why not it be classified as one of her best books? I wish Paterson wrote even more adventure books like Bridge to Terabithia. Personally, i like adventure, action, and romance movie and books the most. I think that they are the most interesting. I love the author, Katherine Paterson and Bridge to Terabithia. Here is a hyperlink to the movie Bridge to Terabithia!⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ This week, we watched a "Bullies" movie which was very sad. I realized many things, many things that bullies do. Bullies will bully anyone who might be in any way, unique. We also wrote a reflection on the movie here is a sneak peak to my reflection. "Many things were swarming my head while we were watching the “Bullies” movie. I couldn't’ stop thinking about how anyone would think that bullying was right. Hurting someone is never the answer and the fact that so many people in this situation thought it was, it really hurt me. The bullies, bystanders, and even the principals were a part of Jamie’s, the boy that got bullied and tortured, problem. He would think of suicide, which he attempted, he ran away, and wouldn't stop being depressed and angry. I felt very sad for the boy, I also was very sad and unhappy about how a little 11 year-old boy killed himself because people were taunting him by saying he was gay. He wasn't even gay! I wish that people would not act on their thoughts, because off they didn't act on their thoughts, their would be little if any bullying!" So, that is a sneak peak to the reflection I wrote. It was a very touching movie that made me wipe me eyes from tears at one point. I loved how it ended though, the boy who was bullied got money back for all of his troubles. I really liked the concept/topic of the video. Here is a hyperlink to a video about bullying⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ This week we finished our historical narrative! We finished the Heart of a Samurai in February, recently we got assigned to do a historical narrative. We picked a character in the novel to be the one who tells the story in his/her point of view. I picked Manjiro, the main character in the story. also, we had to choose an event to write about and I wrote about the chapter, “The Daguerrotype”. The chapter is about Manjiro and his best friend Terry going to get a portrait. Manjiro decided he didn't want one taken, but Terry wanted one because he was going to give it to his family to remember him. Terry went off to California to find gold, he also asked Manjiro if he wanted to go with him. Manjiro felt guilty for leaving the Whitfield’s because he had just returned. If Manjiro found gold, he would have enough money to go back to Japan! He asked Mrs. Whitfield and she allowed him to go. They both went together, and that was the end of the chapter. I wrote it very similar, but I obviously changed all of the words. I also added a character, the man with the black box (daguerrotype), whose name was Darren. I had a very fun time writing my narrative.I thought that art was a great idea to be able to write an essay. I know that many complaints were made because the narrative had to be at least three pages long, but I still loved it!
